Ladakh is one of the most photographed landscapes in India — and also one of the most technically demanding places to shoot. The light is intense and high-contrast. The air is dry, dusty, and thin. What altitude does to your camera
Altitude affects photographic equipment in ways that aren't obvious until they happen. Three things matter most: UV intensity, cold, and dust.
UV intensity. At 3,500m in Leh and higher across the plateau, UV radiation is significantly stronger than at sea level. This has two consequences for photography. First, shots taken in direct midday light will be more blown out and harsher than you expect — the characteristic overexposure problem in Ladakh midday images. Second, UV haze creates a flat, milky quality in wide landscape shots. A UV filter on the lens helps. Cold. Nights in Ladakh, even in July, are cold — particularly at Pangong (around 4,350m) and Hanle (around 4,250m). Cold drains lithium batteries faster than normal. A full battery at room temperature may be at 30% after an hour in cold air. The solution is simple but worth knowing: carry spare batteries in an inner pocket close to your body. Body heat keeps them functional. Swap them in as needed.
Dust. Ladakh is a high-altitude desert. The Changthang plateau particularly is dusty — dust devils are common in afternoon wind, and fine particles settle on everything. Sensor dust is a real issue if you change lenses outdoors. Do lens changes inside a vehicle or in shelter when possible. Pack a blower brush and lens cleaning cloths. Weather-sealed camera bodies are more forgiving in Ladakh than unsealed ones, though they're not invulnerable to fine dust either.
Light timing: when Ladakh is at its best
The quality of light in Ladakh changes dramatically across the day. Midday is the hardest time to shoot — harsh overhead sun, maximum UV, blown-out skies. The hours that reward patience are the early morning and the hour before sunset.
Sunrise at Shanti Stupa. The white stupa on the hill above Leh catches the first light of morning while the valley is still in shadow. The contrast between the lit stupa and the dark mountains beyond is difficult to replicate at any other time of day. The walk up takes 20 to 30 minutes from the main road — set the alarm.
Pangong Tso at dawn. The lake's famous blue-green shifts depending on the angle and the light. Early morning — before the tourist vehicles arrive and before the midday wind picks up — gives the flattest water and the cleanest reflections. The colour reads most clearly in that first hour of light, before UV haze builds. The drive from Leh takes five to six hours, so most visitors stay overnight to catch the morning properly.
Monastery interiors: late afternoon. Thiksey, Hemis, and Diskit all have interior courtyards and prayer halls where the light in late afternoon is warm and directional. Interior photography requires permission at most monasteries — ask at the gate rather than assuming. Flash is generally prohibited.
The Changthang plateau: any time except midday. The plateau's scale — wide, flat, uninterrupted — means that early morning and evening light creates long shadows across the grassland and gives the landscape dimension. The same scene at noon looks flat and overlit. The plateau is also where the night sky photography is best — Hanle and the surrounding area have some of the darkest skies in India, and on a clear night the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye.

Shooting the night sky
The combination of altitude, dry air, minimal light pollution, and clear skies makes the Changthang one of the best places in the country for astrophotography. The Indian Astronomical Observatory at Hanle is there for this reason — the conditions are exceptional.
For astrophotography, the basics: a camera that handles high ISO well (modern full-frame and even crop sensor bodies can do this), a fast wide-angle lens (f/2.8 or wider), a sturdy tripod, and a remote shutter release or self-timer to avoid camera shake. The rule of 500 — divide 500 by your focal length to get the maximum exposure in seconds before stars trail — applies at any altitude, but the images at Hanle will be significantly better than they would be from a city simply because the stars are there in full number.
The cold is the limiting factor at night in Hanle. Bring extra batteries, keep your phone (which you're using as a remote or reference) in an inner pocket, and dress for temperatures that can drop well below zero even in July.
Drone restrictions: what you need to know
Drones are heavily restricted in Ladakh. The region borders China and Pakistan, and large areas — including Hanle, the Changthang plateau, and areas near the Line of Actual Control — are prohibited or restricted zones for drone operation. Even in areas not explicitly restricted, drone operation in India requires DGCA registration for the drone, a remote pilot certificate, and flight approval via the DGCA's Digital Sky platform. This is a significant administrative process — not something to organise on arrival in Leh. Ladakh's population is small and close-knit.
